An incredible weekend
If you want to spend an incredible weekend, we have what you need. Can you imagine what it is like to get to Bermeo or Lekeitio by sea? You won’t believe it until you experience it by yourself. I still remember my first time with passion. You moor at the port and you have at your disposal all the marine life elements that these places have to offer. Fairs, markets, museums, gastronomy, the frontón, rural sports... You can go out and have a few potes (small drinks) and pintxos (small snacks) in their lively taverns, visit the casino or chat with the arrantzales (fishermen), who are always ready and willing to help travellers, and tell them about their incredible sea stories. And what can be said about the festivities! In summer there is always some festivity going on here. If the sun rises it is a good enough reason for the Basque people to celebrate... And if the sun does not rise, it is a good reason too!
For example:
We leave on Friday from Getxo and coast the cliffs of La Galea, the beaches, more cliffs... more beaches... After sailing a few miles we leave Cabo Villano on the starboard side and continue east. We will enjoy the pleasure of sailing silently near San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and the Akatz rock (Peñón de Akatz), a pleasure that borders that of a mystical experience, something that is really difficult to forget. We will continue until we pass Cape Matxitxako, we can anchor in Arribolas, take a swim and then moor in Bermeo, where we will spend the night.
On Saturday we go to sea, not without first having breakfast on the deck or in one of the many port cafeterias. We will play it by ear.
Between the Izaro Island and lower Otzarri there is a beautiful passage from where you can view the entrance to the Urdaibai estuary, which is where the famous left wave, that put Mundaka on the international surfing circuit years ago, is formed. Laida and Laga are two incredible beaches that change size and shape with the tide. We will be viewing one of the most beautiful landscapes in Euskal Herria, sailing forward and taken aback watching the majestic walls of Cape Ogoño, to then reach Elantxobe on the Er side. Difficult decision, "Shall we stop? Shall we continue?"
If we decide to continue we are 6 miles away from Cape Santa Catalina, behind which hides Lekeitio, another of the most picturesque and lively towns of our coastline. It is a good place to spend the night and enjoy the atmosphere, have dinner, dance...
On Sunday we will sail back to Getxo, we will stop for a swim, eat in the boat's cockpit, and practice sailing, spending the day on board enjoying the sailing experience. Finally, we will return to the port, where we will take stock of the experience and say goodbye until next time.
