Marmitako Sailing Logbook

10 things nobody tells you before you get your PER (but you should know)

If you’re thinking about getting your PER (Recreational Skipper’s License) in Bilbao, there are things no one tells you that can make all the difference. Discover real tips, common mistakes, and how to be prepared to enjoy the sea from day one.

If you’re thinking about getting your PER (Recreational Craft Skipper’s License), you’ve probably already seen the typical things: freedom, the sea, sunsets, and unlimited sailing. And yes, all of that is true… but there are some things that almost no one tells you before you start.

At Marmitako Sailing, we see this constantly with our students. Here are 10 truths that will help you get a head start (and avoid surprises).

1. It’s not difficult… but it’s not exactly a walk in the park either.

Many people start out thinking the PER (Rural Employment Plan) is complicated, while others believe it’s an easy process. The reality lies somewhere in between.

  • With good preparation, it can be passed without a problem.
  • But you need to dedicate a few hours to it and understand concepts, not just memorize.

2. The theoretical part is not always the most important (even though it may seem so)

Yes, you have to pass an exam. But what really makes you a boss is practice.

  • Knowing how to react, interpret the sea, and handle a ship is not something you learn in a test.
  • We offer practical training before or after the exam. This way, you can be better prepared for the test and get any questions answered on board.

3. Internships are where it all really begins

Many students arrive with doubts… and leave with a smile.

It is on the ship where you will be able to:

  • Understand what you have studied
  • You gain confidence and autonomy.
  • You can already imagine yourself sailing on your own. Although you’ll still need more practice to gain confidence.

4. The sea isn’t always like it is on Instagram

There isn’t always sunshine and calm…

There are also:

  • Waves and swell
  • Gusty and shifting wind
  • Quick decision making

And that, far from being a bad thing, is what makes the experience real and exciting. For this reason, we offer courses called “Sea and Wind Workshops” where you can gain confidence and security when carrying out maneuvers “to port successfully.”

5. With us you will learn more than you expect (and not just about ships)

The PER is not just a qualification. You learn:

  • Responsibility
  • Security
  • decision making
  • More about sailing, ships, meteorology, etc.

It’s a very comprehensive training program, even if it doesn’t seem that way at first.

6. Yes, you can get it before summer (if you organize yourself)

Many people think it’s too late… but it’s not. With a little dedication, you still have time to take the exam on June 6th at the BEC (Bilbao).

If you start during Easter week, you can easily reach summer with your degree and internship completed.

7. The choice of school changes everything

This point is key.

It’s not the same:

  • Boring vs. dynamic classes.
  • Mass-produced vs. personalized practices
  • Instructors without passion vs. people who live for the sea
  • What supports us is the opinions of our students on Google.

This is where you really make a difference in your experience.

8. You’ll meet like-minded people.

One of the best “side effects” of the PER:

  • You meet people who are keen to sail
  • Plans, outings, and friendships emerge

The sea unites far more than you can imagine.

9. After the PER… the good stuff begins

Many believe that everything ends upon passing. But that’s not the case.

But in reality:

  • Boat trips begin
  • The practices are more advanced
  • Boat trips with friends, family, or your partner… That’s what you’re looking for.

10. It’s going to hook you (more than you think)

This is what no one tells you clearly. And you can verify it by looking at what the students say.

Once you start:

  • Do you want to browse more?
  • You think of voyages
  • You’re considering other titles. And when you read this, you’ll surely think, “Why don’t I go for Yacht Master?”

The sea has something captivating about it… and it’s difficult to explain until you experience it.

And…what now?

If you’re reading this, you’re probably already considering it.

The question isn’t whether you can get the PER (Recreational Skipper’s Certificate), the question is when you want to start.

At Marmitako Sailing we organize courses and practical sessions designed for you to enjoy from day one, especially during key times such as Easter or before summer.
