I still remember my first time with rapturous excitement. You moor in the port, and you have at your disposal all the elements of maritime life that these places offer: fairs, markets, museums, gastronomy, the pelota court, rural sports…
You can go out for a few drinks or chat with the fishermen, always ready to help travelers and tell their incredible stories of the sea. And what can I say about the festivals! In summer, it’s always a festival here. If the sun comes out, the Basques have something to celebrate… And if it doesn’t, they have something to celebrate anyway.
We left Getxo on Friday and sailed along the cliffs of La Galea, where we could see the folds of the flysch, whose formation is said to date back to the time of the dinosaurs. Beaches, more cliffs, more beaches…
After sailing a few miles, we left Cabo Villano to starboard and continued east. In this way, we discovered that sailing silently in the vicinity of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and the Akatz Rock is a pleasure bordering on a mystical experience.
Something truly unforgettable. We’ll continue past Cape Matxitxako and anchor in Arribolas for a swim. Afterwards, we’ll moor in Bermeo for the night.
On Saturday we set sail, but not before enjoying breakfast on deck or in one of the many taverns in the port.
It depends on the conditions. Between Izaro Island and the Otzarri shoal, there’s a beautiful passage offering views of the entrance to the Urdaibai Estuary, where the famous left-hand wave forms that years ago put Mundaka on the international surfing circuit. Laida and Laga are two incredible beaches that change size and shape with the tide.
We’re enjoying one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Basque Country; we continue onward, and after being awestruck by the majestic cliffs of Cape Ogoño, we pass it. Now we have Elantxobe to our starboard side. A difficult decision: do we stop? Do we continue?
Should we decide to continue, we are six miles from Cape Santa Catalina, behind which lies another of the most picturesque and lively towns on our coast: Lekeitio. A great place to spend the night and enjoy the atmosphere, have dinner, dance…
On Sunday we’ll sail back to Getxo. We’ll stop for a swim, have lunch in the cockpit, and practice our sailing skills. Another advantage of renting the sailboat for groups is being able to spend a day on board enjoying the sailing experience.
Finally, we will arrive at the port, where we will reflect on the experience and say goodbye until next time.
