Storm Benjamin in Bizkaia: how to protect your boat in the Port of Getxo during the storm

Storm Benjamin batters the coast of Bizkaia with waves exceeding 7 meters and strong gusts of wind. In Getxo, the sea is crashing powerfully against Punta Galea and Ereaga beach, testing the moorings and boats of the marina. Now is the time to take extra precautions: checking ropes, fenders, and bilge systems is key to protecting your boat from this storm, which serves as a reminder of the Cantabrian Sea’s untamed power.

Storm Benjamin has battered the coast of Bizkaia , bringing waves exceeding 7 meters in height and wind gusts of over 90 km/h . In Getxo , especially around the marina , the Abra estuary, and Punta Galea , the sea is showing its most ferocious side.
For shipowners and sailors in the area, this storm is a call to action: check moorings, reinforce fenders and protect the vessel against the extreme conditions brought by the storm.

What’s happening: Storm Benjamin batters Getxo and the Biscayan coast

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a red alert for maritime-coastal risk in Bizkaia. Combined swells from the northwest have generated large waves along the entire coastline, with a particularly strong impact on open areas such as the Abra Exterior in Getxo , where the constant rocking of the waves is a constant challenge.

According to forecasts, the storm will remain active for several days, with wind gusts that could endanger boats that are poorly secured or have worn-out mooring lines. Therefore, the sailors at the Getxo Marina and local yacht clubs are reinforcing preventative measures.

Checklist: How to prepare your boat in Getxo for Storm Benjamin

Below is a practical overview of the essential actions to protect your boat in ports such as Getxo, Santurce or Plentzia , where the storm is at its most critical point.

1. Check of moorings

  • Double the main mooring lines with reinforcing ropes at the bow and stern.
  • Use elastic cords (with springs) or intermediate fenders to absorb sudden jerks.
  • Check the pant’s tie-down points and replace any that show wear.
  • If you are in the Getxo Marina , check with the marina staff: many pontoons have reinforced points for storms.

2. Defenses and lateral separation

  • Place additional fenders between your boat and the dock or between nearby vessels.
  • Check that the fenders are at the correct height of the pier , especially if the swell has raised the sea level.

3. Closures, hatches and deck

  • Close all hatches and louvers : prevent saltwater leaks.
  • Secure awnings, tarpaulins and movable elements: a strong gust of wind can tear them off.
  • Remove any loose objects from the cockpit or deck (bottles, extra fenders, ropes).

4. Electrical and drainage system

  • Check that the automatic bilge pump is working properly.
  • Keep batteries charged and check connectors to prevent short circuits due to moisture.
  • If your vessel has remote monitoring , activate the water or low voltage alerts.

During a storm: what to do if your boat is in the port of Getxo or the Abra Maritime Marina

Avoid going onto the dock during the peak of the storm: the wind and waves can make it dangerous.

Observe the movement of the vessel from land and take photos or videos if you detect any anomalies (for insurance purposes).

If you notice that a mooring line is too tight or at its limit, contact the port staff . They can adjust or reinforce the lines without taking unnecessary risks.

Stay informed through AEMET ‘s official channels.

After the storm: inspection and maintenance

When the storm subsides, it is essential to carry out a complete inspection of the vessel :

  1. Check the hull and waterline. Look for dents or scrapes caused by the dock or fenders.
  2. Check the electrical and drainage systems. Salinity and humidity may have affected connections.
  3. Clean the deck and fittings. Salt deposited after the storm accelerates corrosion.
  4. Check the propeller, rudder, and anchors. If the vessel has been subjected to constant movement, parts may have loosened.

A little tip: Take advantage of this storm to perform a complete preventative maintenance check . Storms like Benjamin serve as a reminder of the importance of regularly inspecting lines, fenders, and fittings.

Getxo: an exposed but prepared port

The Getxo Marina is located in one of the areas most exposed to the waves of the Cantabrian Sea , but it also has a modern infrastructure and qualified personnel that reinforces safety in episodes like this.
Thanks to its protected dock and secure mooring systems, properly prepared vessels can withstand the storm without significant damage.

However, it’s essential not to be overconfident: every storm teaches a lesson . Reviewing, reinforcing, and preventing problems is the best strategy to ensure your vessel emerges unscathed and ready for the next voyage.

Storm Benjamin is leaving a significant mark on Bizkaia, and Getxo is no exception. If your boat is in the port or a nearby dock, take precautions today .
Every line checked, every fender properly positioned, and every closure secured can make the difference between a minor scare and costly damage.

Take care of your boat, reinforce your moorings, and trust in local nautical expertise.
When the storm passes, you will once again enjoy the Abra with clean wind and calm seas.
