Knots are indispensable for life on board. From securing the vessel to the dock to fixing a sail or joining ropes, each knot has a specific function. A good knot must meet three requirements: it must be easy to tie, strong, and easy to untie when necessary .
Below, we present the most useful nautical knots that every sailor should know.
🔹 Uses: To create a fixed loop in a rope, to secure a vessel, or to make a secure mooring.
🔹 Features: Firm, safe and easy to undo even after withstanding tension.
🔹 How to do it:
1. Form a small loop at the end.
2. Pass the free end of the rope through the loop, around the fixed part and reinsert it through the loop.
3. Adjust and tighten the knot.
📌 Marmitako Tip: It is known as “the knot that never fails” and is one of the most important in navigation.
🔹 Uses: To attach a rope to a post, railing or ring, ideal for attaching fenders.
🔹 Features: It takes seconds and is very useful for quick fixes.
🔹 How to do it:
1. Wrap the end around the object and cross the end over itself.
2. Go around the object again and pass the end under the second loop.
3. Tighten the knot securely.
