In simple terms, the rigging consists of a series of elements that secure the masts of our sailboat to its hull and allow us to operate them. It involves securing the mast(s) and making the entire system work. How?

Types of rigging on a sailboat

There are two main types of rigging on a sailboat: standing rigging and running rigging . Each has a specific purpose and is essential for the boat’s operation. Below, we explain what they consist of.

Standing rigging consists of the fixed elements (although some have some mobility) that fix the masts of a sailing ship.

Shrouds : These are the cables that attach the mast to the hull of the sailboat laterally.

The high shrouds :

They are attached to the hull from the chainplates and reach to the top of the mast.

Lower shrouds : They are attached to the hull from the chainplates and reach up to the first level of cross-braces.

Shutters : They run from the end of one crossbeam to the base of the next, thus reinforcing the system when there are several levels of crossbeams.

Chainhead : Very strong metal pieces that are fixed on the deck, on the hull or on the gunwale where the turnbuckles of the shrouds are attached by means of a hook or other system.

Stay : This is the cable that supports the mast from its top (in the case of a mast-topped rig) to the bow of the sailboat. In fractional rigs, it does not reach the top and its length depends on the fraction of the design.

Backstay – This is the cable that supports the mast from its top to the stern of the sailboat. It usually has a multi-pulley system to make it easier to trim in strong winds. Additionally, hydraulic systems are sometimes used; by operating a handle with up-and-down movements, the backstay is trimmed (tension is generated) in a different way.

Backstays : These are cables that limit the mast’s forward tilt, and tensioning them helps control its flex. They are useful for sailing with fractional rigs and on sailboats with staysails when the spreaders are set back.

The running rigging consists of a series of ropes and tackle that allow us to trim our sailboat optimally. With practice, we will learn to handle it and achieve fantastic results. However,

Halyards : We call halyards the ropes that work vertically and are used to raise or lower sails. They are attached to the halyard clews of the sails.

Sheets : These are the lines that run horizontally and are used to adjust, trim, and thaw the sails. They are attached with knots or shackles to the grommets at the clews of the sails. To operate them, pulley systems, deck trolleys, and winches are used.

Lifting lines : These are ropes that work vertically and that we will use to raise and lower the spinnaker pole, the boom or any yard we use on the sailboat.






Trapa or Contra: A multiplied rigging that runs from the base of the mast to the first third of the boom (approx. There are also rigid ones), which serves to prevent the tendency of the boom to rise and thus control the opening of the leech of the mainmast, especially on courses open to the wind.

Pajarín : It is a rope that pulls aft from the clew of the mainsheet, adjusting the tension of the sail.

Rigging Maintenance

Proper rigging maintenance is essential to ensure the sailboat remains in good condition and sails efficiently and safely. Some rigging maintenance tips include:

• Periodic inspection : Regularly check cables, halyards and sheets to ensure there are no signs of wear, breakage or corrosion.
• Lubrication : Lubricates pulleys and locks to prevent them from jamming or deteriorating quickly.
